About Orion mass market paperback
Orion is a London publishing group founded in 1991 by Anthony and Rosemary Cheetham, and Orion mass-market paperbacks are the small-format paperback editions it issues of its fiction list, typically after a hardback or trade paperback.
Orion grew quickly by acquisition. It bought Weidenfeld & Nicolson soon after its founding, took on assets of Chapman Publishers and the Littlehampton Book Services warehouse in 1993, and in December 1998 bought Cassell, bringing in Victor Gollancz and the Cassell military list. Hachette Livre took a majority stake in 1998 and became sole owner in 2003, and Orion now forms part of Hachette UK. Its imprints include Orion Fiction, Gollancz, Weidenfeld & Nicolson, Phoenix, Seven Dials, Trapeze and White Rabbit.
Crime fiction is central to the list. Orion publishes Ian Rankin, whose Rebus novel Resurrection Men (2002) won the Edgar Award for Best Novel in 2004, and Michael Connelly is another leading Orion author. A mass-market paperback is normally a later format of a book that first appeared in hardback, so collectors of these authors usually seek the hardback first edition instead.
