About Perfection Learning Corporation

Perfection Learning Corporation is a family-owned American educational publisher based in Logan, Iowa, founded in 1926 by William and Valborg Keay as the Perfection Form Company.

William Keay was superintendent of the Logan schools and Valborg a high school mathematics teacher; they started the business with $10 and a small bank loan, selling printed school forms. Literature tests followed in the 1930s. After William's death in 1951 Valborg ran the firm for about eleven years, and Clint and Charlene Keay took over in 1962; the family still runs it. The company began selling popular novels to schools in 1968, launched its Cover Craft hardback books with a lifetime guarantee in the late 1970s, and adopted the name Perfection Learning Corporation on 2 July 1991.

Since 2001 it has grown by acquisition, buying Clark Publishing, Barrett Kendall, Kinetic Books, AMSCO School Publications (2013) and Turtleback (2019), a maker of prebound editions of trade books, among others. Its current list covers AP and honours courses, literacy, science, social studies, world languages and career education.

Recent trade novels in Perfection Learning or Turtleback bindings are later school and library editions of books first published by other houses. T. J. Klune's The House in the Cerulean Sea, for instance, was first published by Tor Books in March 2020, so a Perfection Learning copy is not the first edition.
