About Rebound by Sagebrush
Rebound by Sagebrush is the catalogue name for books rebound by Sagebrush Corporation, an American library rebinder that put other publishers' paperbacks into durable library bindings and gave them new ISBNs.
How it worked. Sagebrush took existing paperbacks, rebound them for library use and obtained fresh ISBNs for the rebound copies, so the same text appears in catalogues under the Sagebrush name. Its head in 2004 was Jim Zicarelli.
The 2004 dispute. In August 2004 the Publishers Marketing Association threatened a class action, arguing that the new ISBNs, combined with easy ordering on Amazon, confused customers. Bowker, the ISBN agency, also disputed Sagebrush's view that every rebound book needed its own ISBN. A settlement reported in March 2005 required Sagebrush to obtain a publisher's approval before rebinding its titles, let the two sides decide whose ISBN the rebound book would carry, and allowed publishers to ask for their name or logo on the rebound cover.
Later. By 2009 Sagebrush Books was one of the earlier trading names of the commercial binding business of Topeka Bindery in Topeka, Kansas, which Booksource had bought along with the Turtleback Books brand.
