About Sage Publications
Sage Publications, now trading as Sage Publishing, is an independent academic publisher of journals, textbooks and research methods books, founded in New York City in 1965 by Sara Miller McCune.
McCune started the company at the age of 24 with $500 of capital and a one-room office. The name combines the first letters of her given name and that of her mentor, George McCune. In 1966 the firm moved to Southern California, and its headquarters are now in the Newbury Park area of Thousand Oaks. A London office, established within its first decade, became its European headquarters, and it later added offices in India, Singapore, Melbourne, Washington DC and Toronto. McCune led the company as president for 18 years and became chair of its board in 1984.
Sage launched its first journal in its founding year and now publishes more than 1,000 journals alongside more than 800 books a year, with journals such as Improving Schools, Journal of Developing Societies and Journal of Transport History.
The company has expanded by acquisition, adding imprints and businesses including Corwin, CQ Press, Learning Matters, Adam Matthew Digital, Lean Library, Talis and Mary Ann Liebert. McCune transferred her shares to an independent trust, and the business remains independently owned rather than part of a larger group.
