About Sidgwick and Jackson

Sidgwick & Jackson is a London publishing house founded in 1908 by Frank Sidgwick and Robert Cameron Jackson, which published Rupert Brooke's Poems in 1911 and later became an imprint of Pan Macmillan.

Frank Sidgwick (1879 to 1939) chaired the firm and Jackson (1882 to 1917) served as company secretary. The early list leaned towards literary fiction, poetry and some academic non-fiction. Rupert Brooke's first book, Poems, appeared under the London imprint of Sidgwick & Jackson, Ltd. in 1911, and E. M. Forster was another early author. Brooke is also recorded as having been employed by the firm.

William Armstrong ran the company as managing director from 1968 to 1995. In that later period the house launched popular novelists such as Lynda La Plante, Shirley Conran and Judith Krantz.

Pan Macmillan bought Sidgwick & Jackson from Trusthouse Forte in the mid-1980s, and the name has since been used as a Pan Macmillan imprint within the Holtzbrinck group. The firm's business records from 1903 to 1966 are held by the Bodleian Library in Oxford.
