About Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing
Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing is the children's and young adult division of the New York publisher Simon & Schuster, issuing picture books, middle-grade fiction and teen novels through imprints such as Atheneum, Aladdin and Margaret K. McElderry Books.
Its parent company was founded in New York on 2 January 1924 by Richard L. Simon and M. Lincoln Schuster. Simon & Schuster bought Macmillan in the early 1990s and has owned the Atheneum properties since 1994. Atheneum itself was founded in New York in 1959 by Alfred A. Knopf Jr., Simon Michael Bessie and Hiram Haydn, and in the 2000s Simon & Schuster created Atheneum Books for Young Readers as a children's imprint.
The division's current imprints include Aladdin, Atheneum Books for Young Readers, Beach Lane Books (set up in 2008 in San Diego), Boynton Bookworks, Denene Millner Books, Little Simon, Margaret K. McElderry Books, Salaam Reads, Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers and Simon Spotlight. Simon Pulse, a teen imprint launched in 1999 as Pocket Pulse and renamed in 2001, is now listed as a former imprint. In May 2020 the division was reorganised into a trade group for picture books, middle grade and young adult titles, and a branded group for preschool, early readers, licensing and similar lists.
Simon & Schuster was owned in turn by Gulf+Western, Paramount, Viacom, CBS and Paramount Global. Since 30 October 2023 it has belonged to the private equity firm KKR.
