About Taylor & Francis Group
Taylor & Francis Group is a British academic publisher of journals and books, based at Milton Park near Abingdon in Oxfordshire and owned by Informa since the two merged in 2004.
The business dates its origins to 1798, when the printer Richard Taylor started the Philosophical Magazine, one of the first scientific journals. The chemist William Francis joined him in 1852, the year usually given for the firm. It became a private limited company in 1936, with scientists among its directors, and only began publishing books in 1965, through Wykeham Publications. Buying Hemisphere Publishing in 1988 gave it the Taylor & Francis Group name.
In 1998 the group listed on the London Stock Exchange and bought Routledge, which more than doubled its size. CRC Press followed in 2003, then Focal Press (2012), Dove Medical Press (2017), F1000 Research (2020), Prufrock Press (2021) and PeerJ (2024). The Garland Science list was sold to W. W. Norton in 2017.
Today the group publishes more than 2,500 journals and thousands of new books a year, under imprints that include Routledge, CRC Press and Taylor & Francis. Research it has published ranges from Charles Darwin to Marie Curie, and Albert Einstein and Sigmund Freud among Routledge's authors.
