About Viz Media

Viz Media is a San Francisco publisher and distributor of English-language manga and anime, founded in 1986 by Seiji Horibuchi as Viz Communications, with start-up money from Shogakukan, and now owned by the Japanese publishers Shueisha and Shogakukan.

In 2005 it merged with ShoPro Entertainment, Shogakukan's American subsidiary, and took the name Viz Media; its parent is Shogakukan-Shueisha Productions.

Its catalogue includes many of the best-known manga series in English, among them Dragon Ball, One Piece, Naruto, Bleach, Inuyasha and Detective Conan, published as Case Closed. It released the first English volume of Death Note in October 2005 and Junji Ito's horror series Uzumaki, first issued in three volumes in 2001 and 2002, reissued with new covers in 2007 and 2008, and collected as a deluxe hardcover in 2013.

Its English-language Shonen Jump magazine began with an issue cover-dated January 2003, which needed three printings and sold more than 300,000 copies.
