About Wadsworth Pub. Co
Wadsworth Publishing Company is an American publisher founded by Richard P. Ettinger Jr. in Belmont, California, which International Thomson bought in 1979 and whose parent business was renamed Cengage Learning in 2007.
Ettinger, born in New York City in 1925, was the son of Richard P. Ettinger, a co-founder of Prentice-Hall, and began his own career at that firm. He started Wadsworth when he was 33, sold it in 1975 and later retired to Newport Beach, California.
International Thomson Publishing's entry into book publishing in 1979 came through its purchase of Wadsworth; Donald W. Jones, who had joined Wadsworth's board in 1977, helped bring about the deal. Thomson regrouped its publishing arm as Thomson Learning in 2000, and in 2002 Wadsworth itself bought F. E. Peacock Publishers. In 2007 Thomson sold the business to a private equity consortium of Apax Partners and OMERS Capital Partners, which renamed it Cengage Learning on 24 July 2007.
