About Voices of Utopia
Voices of Utopia is the name the Belarusian writer Svetlana Alexievich gives to her project of Russian-language books about life in the Soviet Union and its aftermath, built from the testimony of ordinary people. It opened in 1985 with The Unwomanly Face of War, on Soviet women in the Second World War, and Last Witnesses, on children's memories of the same war. Zinky Boys (Soviet soldiers in Afghanistan) and Voices from Chernobyl (1997) followed, and Secondhand Time (2013) is the fifth book. Alexievich won the 2015 Nobel Prize in Literature.
