About Carl Jung

Carl Gustav Jung (26 July 1875 to 6 June 1961) was a Swiss psychiatrist and psychologist, born in Kesswil, Thurgau, who founded analytical psychology and introduced ideas such as archetypes, the collective unconscious and introversion and extraversion.

He worked as a research scientist at the Burghölzli psychiatric hospital in Zurich under Eugen Bleuler and became a close associate of Sigmund Freud. Psychology of the Unconscious (1912), based on lectures at Fordham University, cost him that friendship, and the two broke in 1913. Psychological Types (1921) set out his theory of personality types. He died at Küsnacht, near Zurich, and several of his best-known books appeared after his death. Memories, Dreams, Reflections, a partly autobiographical work prepared with his associate Aniela Jaffé, came out in German in 1962 (Exlibris) and in English, translated by Richard and Clara Winston, from Pantheon in 1963. Man and His Symbols (1964) grew out of his 1959 BBC Face to Face interview with John Freeman and paired his essay Approaching the Unconscious with chapters by Marie-Louise von Franz, Joseph L. Henderson, Aniela Jaffé and Jolande Jacobi. The Red Book was published in 2009.
