Market value

What decides the price

  • It is the first UK edition; the true first was published elsewhere.
  • The first printing is told from later ones by 1 point of issue listed below.
  • The original dust jacket carries much of the price for a book of this age; its condition matters as much as the book's.
  • Condition is graded separately for book and jacket, from Fine down to Poor.

Identification

How to identify this edition

Knopf published the first edition in New York in 1976. The first British edition appeared in London the same year under the Raven Books imprint of Macdonald and Jane's. It is an octavo bound in black boards (described by some dealers as textured cloth) with the title in gilt on the spine, and it has red endpapers. The jacket is priced £3.95 net, so check that the price has not been clipped. Signed copies of the British first are offered at a considerable premium over unsigned ones.
