First edition Hardback The Vampire Chronicles no. 7

Merrick (2000)

Market value

What decides the price

  • It is the first edition, which is the one collectors want.
  • The original dust jacket carries much of the price for a book of this age; its condition matters as much as the book's.
  • Condition is graded separately for book and jacket, from Fine down to Poor.

Publisher's practice

How Alfred A. Knopf marked its first editions

  • Until about 1933 Knopf printed no first edition statement; later printings were marked on the copyright page ("Second Printing", "Third Printing" and so on), so a copy with no printing note is a first.
  • A copyright page reading "First and second printings before publication" belongs to the second printing, not the first.
  • From about 1933 to 1934 the first printing carries "First Edition" on the copyright page, or "First American Edition" when the book had already appeared abroad.
  • Books from Knopf's London house (closed in 1930) give "first published" with the month and year on the back of the title page, with later impressions numbered.

We have not yet confirmed the issue points that tell this first impression from later ones. Until we do, compare your copy's title page and copyright page with the publisher, place and year above: any later printing or edition statement means it is not this one.
