About Wiley
Wiley, formally John Wiley & Sons, is an American publisher of research, scientific, technical and educational books and journals, founded in 1807 when Charles Wiley opened a print shop in Manhattan.
In the nineteenth century the firm published American literature, with James Fenimore Cooper, Washington Irving, Edgar Allan Poe and Herman Melville among its authors; as Wiley and Putnam it issued the first American edition of Melville's Typee in March 1846. It later concentrated on science, engineering and technical publishing.
Wiley has been publicly owned since 1962 but members of the Wiley family still sit on its board. It moved its headquarters to Hoboken, New Jersey, in 2002. In 2001 it bought Hungry Minds, formerly IDG Books, the publisher of the For Dummies series that began with DOS For Dummies in 1991. In 2007 it acquired Blackwell Publishing for about US$1.12 billion, creating its Wiley-Blackwell research business, and in 2021 it bought the open access publisher Hindawi. It trades on the New York Stock Exchange.
