AQA GCSE English Literature set texts 2026 to 2027
24 books set by AQA, each with its first edition, the points that identify it and what it is worth where sales are recorded.
AQA GCSE English Literature set texts for 2026 to 2027: 24 books in 3 groups. We have identified the first edition of 23 of them and hold recorded values for 1. A school or study copy of any of these is a reprint worth a few pounds; the first printing of the first edition is the copy collectors pay for. The list comes from the official source, read on 22 October 2026.
AQA sets the GCSE English Literature texts for the largest share of pupils in England, and its list has barely moved since the reformed specification was first examined in 2017. A pupil studies one Shakespeare play, one nineteenth-century novel, one modern prose or drama text and a poetry anthology cluster, so the twenty-four books above are the whole field from which a school chooses; in practice Macbeth, A Christmas Carol and An Inspector Calls are the most taught combination, and Paper 1 (Shakespeare and the nineteenth-century novel) sits on 11 May 2026 with Paper 2 on 19 May.
The collecting angle is simple. Every one of these books exists in millions of school copies, and none of those is worth more than a few pounds. What collectors pay for is the first printing of the first edition: the 1843 Chapman and Hall A Christmas Carol in its red cloth with "Stave I", the 1886 Longmans Jekyll and Hyde in paper wrappers, the 1945 Secker and Warburg Animal Farm, the 1954 Faber Lord of the Flies in its Anthony Gross jacket. Each row links to the book's page, where the first edition is identified against two sources, its points of issue are listed, and a value band appears once we hold recorded sales of that printing.
Shakespeare is the exception that proves the rule: the plays were first printed in quartos and the 1623 First Folio, which are museum pieces, so the collectable editions pupils might actually encounter are much later. The nineteenth-century novels are the sweet spot for a collector who studied them at school: first editions of Jane Eyre, Great Expectations and Frankenstein are rare and expensive, but Victorian reprints with the original illustrations are affordable and still rewarding.
Use this page as the official list with the collecting facts added. The list itself is the board's; we read it on the date shown, and the "What changed" note records any movement between years.
