Edexcel A Level English Literature set texts 2026 to 2027

40 books set by Pearson Edexcel, each with its first edition, the points that identify it and what it is worth where sales are recorded.

Edexcel A Level English Literature set texts for 2026 to 2027: 40 books in 9 groups. We have identified the first edition of 28 of them. A school or study copy of any of these is a reprint worth a few pounds; the first printing of the first edition is the copy collectors pay for. The list comes from the official source, read on 22 October 2026.

Pearson's Edexcel A level asks for two plays, two novels and a body of poetry, plus a coursework essay. The drama paper pairs a Shakespeare play, taught alongside Pearson's own anthology of critical essays on tragedy or comedy, with a second play chosen from four written before 1900 and four after. The prose paper is thematic: a school picks one of six themes and teaches two linked novels from it, at least one from before 1900, and students may bring clean copies into the room. Poetry and a free-choice comparative essay make up the rest.

The prose themes shape how departments choose. Science and Society, with Frankenstein against The Handmaid's Tale or Never Let Me Go, and The Supernatural, with Dracula and Beloved or The Little Stranger, are popular because the pairings argue with each other so readily. The list has been settled since 2022, when Lorraine Hansberry's Les Blancs and Lynn Nottage's Sweat came into the drama options and Kamila Shamsie's Home Fire and Attica Locke's The Cutting Season into prose; those texts were first examined in 2024.

This is a list a collector could spend a fortune on. Frankenstein (Lackington, 1818) appeared anonymously in three volumes and is one of the great rarities of English fiction. Dracula (Constable, 1897), The Moonstone (Tinsley, 1868, three volumes) and Lady Audley's Secret (Tinsley, 1862, three volumes) are landmark Victorian firsts; Huckleberry Finn was published in London by Chatto and Windus in December 1884, a few weeks before the American edition. The Picture of Dorian Gray first appeared as a book from Ward, Lock in 1891. Mrs Dalloway (Hogarth Press, 1925) wears a Vanessa Bell jacket, and In Cold Blood (Random House, 1966) and Beloved (Knopf, 1987) are collectable American firsts. Never Let Me Go (Faber, 2005) and The Little Stranger (Virago, 2009) are still affordable.

A school copy is a paperback reprint worth a few pounds. Each row links to the book's page, with the first edition identified against two sources and a value band once we hold recorded sales of that printing.

Changes

What changed

No set-text change applies between 2026 and 2027; Issue 11 (August 2025) only clarified the tragedy and comedy labels for the Shakespeare plays. The last change came in for first teaching in September 2022 and first examination in 2024: Les Blancs and Sweat replaced The Home Place and The Pitman Painters in drama, and Home Fire and The Cutting Season replaced A Passage to India and The Murder Room in prose. The poetry component (Poems of the Decade and the named poet or period selections) is omitted, as this list covers novels and plays only.
