About Narratives of Empire
Narratives of Empire, which its publisher preferred to call the American Chronicles, is Gore Vidal's seven-novel fictional history of the United States, published from 1967 to 2000. The books were written out of historical order: Washington, D.C., the first to appear, was published by Little, Brown in 1967, while Burr (1973) and later volumes came from Random House. Read by period, the sequence runs from Burr, covering the early republic, through Lincoln, 1876, Empire and Hollywood to Washington, D.C. and The Golden Age (2000), which reaches the mid twentieth century.
