About Terry Pratchett

Sir Terry Pratchett (Terence David John Pratchett, 1948-2015) was an English fantasy writer, author of the 41 Discworld novels. He was born in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, on 28 April 1948 and died at Broad Chalke, Wiltshire, on 12 March 2015.

His first book, The Carpet People, was published by Colin Smythe on 16 November 1971 in a printing of 3,000 copies that took over a decade to sell out; he revised it in 1992. The Colour of Magic, the first Discworld novel, followed from Colin Smythe on 24 November 1983. Mort, the fourth Discworld novel, was published by Victor Gollancz in association with Colin Smythe on 12 November 1987, and Good Omens, written with Neil Gaiman, came from Gollancz on 10 May 1990. He won the Carnegie Medal in 2001 for The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents, was appointed OBE in 1998 and was knighted in 2009. In December 2007 he announced that he had early-onset Alzheimer's disease, later identified as posterior cortical atrophy. His books have sold more than 100 million copies in 43 languages.

For collectors

The Colin Smythe first edition of The Colour of Magic (1983) is the most sought-after early Pratchett because its British first printing was just 506 copies. The Carpet People (1971), first printed in 3,000 copies, is his other early rarity, and Gollancz firsts such as Mort (1987, issued with Colin Smythe) and Good Omens (1990) complete the early run.
