About Sidgwick & Jackson

Sidgwick & Jackson was a London publisher founded in 1908 by Frank Sidgwick and Robert Cameron Jackson, best known for literary fiction and later for popular novelists, and an imprint of Pan Macmillan from the 1980s.

Frank Sidgwick (1879 to 1939) was chairman and Jackson (1882 to 1917) company secretary. The early list included Rupert Brooke, whose 1914 and Other Poems the firm kept in print through many impressions, and E. M. Forster, alongside some academic non-fiction. The firm's records from 1903 to 1966 are held by the Bodleian Library in Oxford.

The company later passed to Trusthouse Forte. William Armstrong ran it as managing director from 1968 to 1995, and the firm helped launch the careers of popular novelists including Shirley Conran, Judith Krantz and Lynda La Plante.

Pan Macmillan acquired Sidgwick & Jackson from Trusthouse Forte in the mid-1980s, and the name continued as a Pan Macmillan imprint within the Holtzbrinck group.
