About Transworld Publishers

Transworld Publishers is a London publishing division of Penguin Random House UK, founded in 1950 as the British arm of the American paperback house Bantam Books and based in Ealing.

Its imprints include Corgi and Black Swan for paperbacks, Doubleday for hardbacks, Bantam and Bantam Press, and the newer Wayward TxF list. Penguin describes Doubleday as Transworld's literary imprint, publishing Terry Pratchett, Kate Atkinson, John Boyne, Rachel Joyce and Bill Bryson, while Bantam's authors include Dan Brown, Lee Child, Paula Hawkins, Jilly Cooper and Sophie Kinsella. Transworld sponsors the Terry Pratchett First Novel Award and has been named Publisher of the Year at the British Book Awards four times.

Ownership followed Bantam's. The German media group Bertelsmann bought half of Bantam in 1977 and all of it in 1980, added Doubleday in 1986 to form Bantam Doubleday Dell, and bought Random House in 1998. Transworld became part of the Random House Group and, after the 2013 merger with Penguin, part of Penguin Random House, owned outright by Bertelsmann since 2020.

Identification

How to identify Transworld Publishers first editions

What to look for

Before 1950

Transworld was set up in 1950, so a Transworld copy of a book with an earlier publication date is a later edition of a book first issued by some other publisher.

1950s to 1980s

  • UNVERIFIED: Corgi and Black Swan are paperback lists, so a Corgi or Black Swan copy of a title that first came out in hardback is a reprint.
  • UNVERIFIED: Later editions often say only "First published by" a named house on the copyright page, so check that the house named there is the one on your title page.

1990s

  • Transworld hardback jackets print the price on the front flap (£9.99 on Lee Child's Killing Floor, Bantam Press 1997), so a fine first should have that flap unclipped.
  • UNVERIFIED: A first impression of Killing Floor gives only its 1997 Bantam Press publication on the copyright page, with no later printings listed.

From 2010

  • Doubleday hardbacks carry a number line, and the lowest number shows the printing, so a first printing includes 1; dealers describe the 2013 Doubleday first of Terry Pratchett's Raising Steam as having a full line including 1.
  • The jacket price stays on the front flap (£20.00 on Raising Steam).
  • UNVERIFIED: A book can be a first edition yet a much later printing, worth far less, so read the number line as well as any edition statement.
