HSC English prescriptions 2027 to 2028 2027 to 2028

46 books set by NSW Education Standards Authority, each with its first edition, the points that identify it and what it is worth where sales are recorded.

HSC English prescriptions 2027 to 2028 for 2027 to 2028: 46 books in 5 groups. We have identified the first edition of 40 of them and hold recorded values for 1. A school or study copy of any of these is a reprint worth a few pounds; the first printing of the first edition is the copy collectors pay for. The list comes from the official source, read on 22 October 2026.

NSW Education Standards Authority sets the texts for the Higher School Certificate in English, and the 2027 to 2028 prescriptions are the ones Year 12 students in New South Wales are taught from Term 4, 2026 and examined on in the HSC from late 2027. Each course has its own modules: English Standard and English Advanced share a common module, Texts and human experiences, and then divide; EAL/D has its own list; English Extension 1 is taught through five electives, from Confessional worlds to Shakespearean worlds. Schools choose texts from each module, so no student reads them all.

The list runs from Shakespeare and Jane Austen to books published in the last few years, which makes it a good map of collecting at every price. The rare-book entries are the plays and the classics: Hamlet and Othello first appeared in quarto (1603 and 1622), Henry IV, Part 1 in a 1598 quarto and The Merchant of Venice in a 1600 quarto, while Julius Caesar and As You Like It were first printed in the 1623 First Folio; and Pride and Prejudice was published by Thomas Egerton in 1813. The modern firsts are the other end: Fahrenheit 451 (Ballantine, 1953), A. S. Byatt's Possession, which won the Booker Prize in 1990, and recent books such as Small Things Like These, Warlight and Cold Enough for Snow, whose first printings can still be found at cover price.

A school copy of any of these is a reprint worth a few dollars. Each row links to the book's page, where the first edition is identified against two sources where we have them, its points are listed, and a value band appears once we hold recorded sales of that printing.

Changes

What changed

These prescriptions replace the 2019 to 2026 list. NESA says fewer than a third of the English Extension texts carry over. A later minor amendment added the first lines of two Louise Glück poems and updated the ISBN for Ali Smith's Autumn. The rows above are the novels, plays and nonfiction books on the list that we catalogue; poetry selections, films and short texts are left out.
